Exciting, exhilarating, energizing, IMTS 2016 has inspired and informed thousands upon thousands to better their businesses by solving manufacturing challenges, introducing new equipment and ideas, and discovering what’s on the horizon.

Since 1912, IMTS has connected buyers and sellers of advanced manufacturing and showcased the disruptive technologies that drive manufacturing innovation.

In anticipation of the huge crowds expected, IMTS 2016 gave the media an advance tour of the most forward-looking technology, as well as specially guided tours to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker opened IMTS 2016 and announced Manufacturing USA, a new brand for the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation. Government officials recognize that a vital advanced manufacturing industry is beneficial to a growing economy.

The next wave of technical advancement was clearly featured in the AMT Emerging Technology Center, where 3D-printed or additive manufacturing products are exponentially compressing product development time. For example, a Willys Army Jeep replica was printed in only 24 hours, and a 3D-printed, electric powered Shelby Cobra was completed in just six weeks. Visitors walked through AMIE, a 3D-printed house that stores and shares energy with a 3D- printed vehicle, and also got a close look at 3D-printed medical implants: a cranium, sternum, and trachea to name a few.

Visitors experienced the future first-hand as they took rides in the driverless vehicle, Olli, at the I.M.T.S Ride Experience, sponsored by Local Motors and IMTS. Olli is the first self-driving cognitive electric shuttle. The vehicle uses the cloud-based cognitive computing capability of IBM Watson to analyze and learn from high-volume data produced by more than 30 sensors embedded in the vehicle, including cameras and LIDAR. Who knows? — Olli may shuttle visitors from their hotels to McCormick Place in 2018.

Visitors took a seat in some other cool vehicles at Today’s Technology Center (TTC), sponsored by GIE Media's Manufacturing Group and IMTS. The TTC represents how businesses are currently implementing the latest advancements in manufacturing technology. Featured in the Center was an Airbus H130 7-person helicopter, a new General Motors Cadillac CT6 mixed material structure vehicle, and The Ohio State University EcoCar3—a 2016 Chevy Camaro converted into a plug-in hybrid vehicle, featuring lightweight materials and advanced computer controls.

For the first time, visitors could benchmark their businesses in Modern Machine Shop’s new Top Shops exhibit. Top Shops is the machining and metalworking industry’s premier resource for identifying operational and business metrics that define world-class competitiveness.

Outside McCormick Place and midweek, approximately 400 IMTS visitors joined the Miles For Manufacturing 5K Run/Walk to promote careers in manufacturing. All proceeds are going to Chicago-based schools and community-based STEM organizations.

Daily social media contests, such as “Show Us IMTS,” “Why YOU are manufacturing,” and “Running Man FitBit Challenge,” garnered a huge amount of participation.

From as far as China, India and Brazil, visitors included experienced industry professionals and curious students. Inventor Jim Allemann attended IMTS for the 25th time! 13-year-old Oliver Leopold visited IMTS for his second time and explored rocket physics as part of the Smartforce Student Summit Challenges.

IMTSTV, the exclusive news program for IMTS, was bigger than ever with two studios and a team of 12 reporters. Informative and entertaining, IMTSTV featured three daily shows, providing viewers with the day’s line up of special events, contests, and exhibit highlights.

Exciting, exhilarating, energizing, IMTS 2016 has inspired and informed thousands upon thousands to better their businesses by solving manufacturing challenges, introducing new equipment and ideas, and discovering what’s on the horizon.

All the excitement at IMTS 2016 is a testament to one of the fastest growing industries, offering excellent compensation, state-of-the-art workplaces, and opportunities to invent, design and use advanced skills to create products that make the world a better place and strengthen our world economy.

IMTS 2016 provided a unique opportunity to accomplish a maximum amount of industry-related business in the minimum amount of time! See you in 2018! IMTS 2018, Sept. 10 -15, McCormick Place, Chicago!
