Every IMTS show provides Joe Elliot, a Model Maker who works in Master Lock Company’s Product Development Center, a reason to be excited. Moving into a new facility in Oak Creek, Wis., provided the company with a great opportunity to look at new technology. Joe came to this year’s show to evaluate milling machines with multiple tooling capabilities, wire EDM machines and workholding fixtures. Most notably, the company is outfitting all its model makers with a new Haas VF-1 vertical machining center by the end of the year. Benefits such as automatic tool changing capabilities will rapidly increase productivity.

These decisions don’t just happen. Joe believes that walking the floor at IMTS is essential. In fact, watching the machines in action is — hands down — the best way to cultivate ideas. Ideas spring from looking at a $0.25 threaded insert to $400,000 3D metal printing machines. Elliot comes to the show confident that he will be inspired, saying, “If you can dream it, someone here has done it.”

Dreams brought to life at IMTS are changing product design dramatically. With huge advancements in additive manufacturing, design concepts that once took four days to machine can now go straight from a CAD file to physical component. This process allows model makers to improve product design by giving them an opportunity to enhance subsequent iterations — sometimes making several designs in a single day.
